HGP protects children's emotional development by addressing trauma
Help a child growing up in public housing get the emotional support he or she need to thrive!
Children who grow up in public housing are often exposed to traumatic experiences growing up - called Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Their young minds and bodies are exposed to extreme levels of stress and trauma. They live in high crime neighborhoods, experience hunger, often lack basic educational support like help getting to school, and are at risk of living in a household where a parent may be incarcerated, working multiple jobs or is not physically or emotionally available.
HGP builds resilience to ACEs in the individual and community through social support, health literacy and role modeling.
HGP uses the assets of the community, caring adults and the support of neighbor-to-neighbor to help these kids. Using the adage, "It takes a Village" we hire and train community leaders to -
  • walk the children to school
  • provide free meals in a family centered environment
  • read to the kids
  • play educational games and are there for them when they need help of any kind
  • give loving support whenever needed
Our peer leaders, called Community Health Leaders also support parents and refer them to services when needed. Our curriculum  also provides parenting skills training.
HGP is creating a CHILD FRIENDLY ZONE at one of San Francisco's oldest and largest public housing sites.
